Reflection: Weeks 5 & 6

                             Week 5
  • The movie "The Future of Food" was watched and discussed. I found it really interesting on how a patten law could harm so many farmers and destroy so many people's lives. This movie really moved me because my uncle and grandpa both farm. I think that if something like this happened on their farm they would be wiped out of their savings too. It really disturbs me how a company could do this to people. Talk about sheer dishonesty and being coldhearted! What ever happened to honest hard work and being kind to one's neighbors? I never want to be employed by a business that treats people like this.
  • However, due to this movie it really made me want to call up my grandpa or uncle and investigate if they know anyone that this has happened to!?!  Not only the seed issues but other problems we've come along so far in this class (pesticides and beef cattle). I think it would be quite enlightening to hear from someone close to me and see their input on it all.
  • We had our second post on how our Eco-Chic lifestyle was going and mine seemed to be going good thus far. I had a question on how much toilet paper I should use in places that are undefined on their sheet separations. Luckily, Dr. V came to the rescue and made some good suggestions that I'm going to put forth for next week.
  • We had our first read n seed due on our book and I also found out so many interesting insights that I never knew. I love this class honestly! It really opens my eyes to things I never knew. I think what I love best is that it pertains to topics that can actually relate to me and my own lifestyle. I appreciate being educated on these kinds of things that no one ever really tells us; especially our government.

Week 6

  •  Hailey and Abby brought amazing apples and to top it off caramel! Num Num Num They knew exactly how to hit my hunger spot.

    • We watched the movie Diet for a New America by John Robbins. This movie really hit a heart string for me when they showed the poor baby cows not being able to move in their holding stalls and then the cook showing the "delicious" veal meat he was getting ready to cook up. I was so grossed out -- number one I don't eat veal as is (because it's baby cow!) and number two I had no idea that this was how veal became so tender.  Poor baby cows :(
    • I thought what Melissa was discussing in class was also very interesting (elimination diet). I think I would like to invest some of my time in this process and see what makes me feel the best and worst.  I'm going to start researching to see if there are any free programs out there that help you get started on this process! Wish me luck :)
    • We had our newest week of Eco-Chic due. I had a bad week previously so I'm really aiming to fix it for next week. I want my updates to be positive and going well. I guess we all have some set backs now and again though.
    • We also learned about the graphical header which I had previously done towards the beginning of the blogging process. However, I thought the most fun thing I accomplished this week was completely changing my blog look! I'm so proud of my newly updated blog site :) Hope you all enjoy it!

Share & Voice: Eta Sigma Gamma

Adopt A Highway
Cleanup Project

Today (October 19th, 2009) we, the Eta Sigma Gamma group, went out and cleaned up our designated highway!
I've never actually done a highway clean up before and had no idea what to expect. Only ten of us could make it out this evening so we split into two groups. Five were to cover one mile and the other five had the second mile. Last years members told stories on how previous years dead animal remains were found and not so nice smells were smelt. I was a bit nervous to go out and start this project since dead animals were not QUITE my cup of tea.
Luckily, once we got out there and split up we had a ton of fun! Kaylen, Chirsten, and I cover one half while Kathy and Sarah J covered the other side of our one mile. Our group came across pop/beer cans, ice bags, and tons of cigarette butts. The only gross thing we experienced was a dead mole BLAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

The other half of ESG found the coolest thing you could possibly ever want to come across on a highway clean up. Steve ended up finding an X-BOX controller AND it even worked!! Talk about the saying, "someone's trash is just another persons' treasure." However, our consensus was that the mom or dad ended up throwing the controller out the window during the trip because the kid wasn't listening. SORRY TO SOME KID OUT THERE MISSING AN X-BOX REMOTE :(

TO SUM IT UP

Either way we ended up having a lot of fun and time flew by so quickly. It ended up taking us about an hour to figure out groups, organize, and walk the highway. We left campus at 5:00pm and ended up arriving back shortly before 7:00pm. All in all fair weather once we started walking and we all were very appreciative that it wasn't snowing.
