Read n Seed 3: Second Quarter of "Diet for a Small Planet"

PART III: DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET REVISED
  • Chapter 1 - America's Experimental Diet

  • -During this chapter one comes to realize that Lappe is pointing out that more animal food and more processed food is the new way of the American diet. "Processed simply means that between the ground and our mouths someone takes out certain things and puts in other things -that aren't always good for us" (119).

-Over half of the fat in the American diet comes from animal foods and out of that amount one third comes directly from red meat.

-The most starling fact I found this chapter was about how every man, woman, and child in the U.S. consume one-third of a pound of sugar daily. Talk about gross! Think about a bag of sugar and really think how much that truly is. It's SICK!

-Toward the end of the chapter a discussion on what there is TOO much of in our diets now is brought up. We as a population are consuming too much sugar, salt, alcohol, calories; while in addition to too many additives, antibiotic residues, and pesticides.

-The chapter is ended with Lappe stating that all hope is not lost for America. We can edit our  eating habits we just need to make some adjustments with our diets. A valid point is made from her "most important first step" idea --> change where you shop. If you shop at a large supermarket chain difficultly will be a problem when trying to find local and 'healthy'. However, if you shop at a community food center or a place like the Whole Foods Co-op in Duluth, you will not only have local choices but you will have a variety of healthy choices set in front of you. Therefore making your process a less challenging and difficult one for the everyday shopper.

  • Chapter 2 - Who Asked for Fruit Loops?

-Lappe starts off this chapter (and is used throughout) with a quote used by a man she met at a party. He stated, "Well, don't blame the corporations. If people are stupid enough to eat junk food, they deserve to get sick. Naturally corporations are going to make what sells best." This set Lappe on a tangent that brought about the chapter and how we assume that people with a weak mind are always the target but Lappe doesn't believe this.

    - The first portion of this chapter is spent discussing how major corporations have taken over smaller business and bought them out. Many of the consumers are clueless to the buyouts and continue to buy the typical foods not knowing they are supporting the larger conglomerate company.

-An example of this is a company named Beatrice Foods. This is a company who I've never heard of before as well as many Americans. However, this company has the rights to over 400 companies!! Tropicana, Milk Duds, Rosarita, La Choy, Swiss Miss, Mother's and Aunt Nellie's and even Samsonite and Airstream --> all are under the Beatrice company now. As a consumer myself I was shocked to read this! I use/ have used almost all of these products and have never heard of the name Beatrice once! Talk about a major company shock. I knew many companies had claim over other ones but I guess I never truly considered what the major coroporations were!

-There are major companies that control the sales of everything are Proctor and Gamble, Campbells, Kellogg's, General Foods, and General Mills. An ironic fact is that our major food corporations specificially Borden's, Nestle, General Foods, and Kellogg's once had set out to make people healthier. Dr. Kellogg was a strict vegetarian who developed the first wheat flakes; yet the company today now has two of the most sugared cereals. Along with the man who created General Mills or Postum wanted to free us all from the evils of caffeine; now they sell seven brands of coffee plus Pop Rocks. Talk about the double edged sword.

-It's sad to see how companies started off as looking out for the betterment of all mankind yet had succumbed to power and money after they became a booming company. They gave into the 'business' and forgot about the people.

  • Chapter 3 - Protein Myths: A New Look

-This chapter really emphasizes the myth that a meat diet is the core of protein. It points out how we have been trained to think that meat the only way we can increase our protein intake. An illustration of different parts of the world shows that vegetables and other whole grains are the protein in their diets. Meats are the "sides" rather than the main meal.

  • Chapter 4 - Protein Complementarity: The Debate (til pg 182)

-A focus on how much quantity we really need for our protein level is brought up. Most Americans think that eating more protein, or more meat, would be better for oneself. The realistic set of it is that a variety of protein is a good thing. Eating different amounts of protein enriched items will be a healthier choice than just focusing in on meat.

PART IV: LESSONS FOR THE LONG HAUL
  • Chapter 1- What Can We Do?

-How we, as a nation, can make a change. We have to the come to the acknowledgment that the first step is the hardest. A friend of Lappe told her when she thought about the downfalls of writing this book and all the debates that would be argued about, "that's a pretty crummy reason for not doing something you believe in... just because other people don't think it's important. If you think it is important, make it important."

-I love her friend that encouraged her with this statement. How motivating to have a friend that pushes you to do something even if no one else believes it's meaningful. I think everyone needs someone like this embedded somewhere in their lives.

  • Chapter 2 - How to Plug In (through page 199)

-I think this chapter is the most crucial. It discusses how to get going you need a positive support system. Every now and then you need to look around and find someone who believes in something just as important as you.  Something they care about so deeply and that they are passionate about.  Also how we can choose people to place in our lives from time to time that challenge us to take risks and explore different routes.

-It's extremely meaningful because without people to show you both sides of a topic you could remain in your own bubble not knowing anything different. Someone causes you to think outside of the box and you are enlightened to many different aspects and realms you might have never known if you didn't open your eyes.

Share & Voice: Blog On Award

Last week I received an award from Karly for my Eta Sigma Gamma post. My post was all about the new honors program I joined and how we took time out of our lives to go clean up the 2 mile stretch of land for Highway Cleanup.

I checked throughout the blogs from the week and knew exactly who I wanted to pass it onto. Pam for her blog about the UMD Smoking Policy Forum. I think she did a great job and deserves this award for educating everyone in the audience about third-hand smoke. I had no idea about third-hand smoke until she spoke in front of everyone at the forum. The fact that Pam could stand up and tell peers and adults information about health problems really blew my mind. I congratulate her on really stepping up and doing what is needed. I'm especially proud because she used to be an ex smoker!! YAY PAM!!

Award Instructions for the Award Winner(s)
  1. Leave a comment below so that I know you "picked up" the award.
  2. Within 1 week, create a Share and Voice post that says you've received the award and indicate who the award is from (be sure to hyperlink).

Share & Voice: UMD's Smoking Policy Forum

SMOKING POLICY FORUM

The forum was held on Tuesday, October 27th in Bohannon Hall 90 from 7pm to 9pm. It was moderated by Dr. Mary Currin-Percival, assistant professor of political science. An encouragement of questions, concerns, or just open ears were wanted. The policy affects everyone and a broad range of opinions and input were wanted before the Student Association meets with University administration. Current proposed changes may be made to the policy and it is up to someone to speak up.

  • I felt like this was something I needed to attend; both of my parents smoke and I thought it was time for a voice out. My boyfriend and I met up with a few of my other friends that are in the American Lung Association group (Erika Serena and Shar Drew). We got these sweet t-shirts to show our support "I am a designated no smoking area." TALK ABOUT SWEET!!!
I was a little disappointed when the forum started because not that many people showed up for how big of a hype I thought it'd give off. However, most of the people there were for the current ban and was sporting the cool shirts we all just received.

As the forum continued I was extremely interested in what was being discussed. Many non-smokers stood up and spoke about how they were in favor of the ban yet the ban needed to be enforced better. There were two actual smokers that took the time to come out and speak their minds. One was a guy (Mr. Dreadlocks is what I ended up calling him) who had many opinions but instead of calmly and rationally discussing them he made ridiculous claims and nonsense accusations.
At the forum I saw Keith at Keithsgreenbike, Jordanne at Jordannesjungle, Pamela at Pamsgreenblog, and Amanda at AmandasWaterBottleWatch. Keith, Pam, and I actually had enough motivation to stand up and voice our opinions/ask questions.

I made a statement to the smokers in the group about how they have a "right" to choose if they want to smoke or not. While going to college is a privilege and is earned not everyone can attend. Additionally since our campus is a privilege to be at and the rules state you cannot smoke on the campus grounds; smokers therefore don't have the right to be on the campus smoking. --> My comment/opinion went into better depths during the forum but that's just a brief summary of what I discussed.

I also commented later on in the forum on a few topics but a opinion I needed to question was when the Student Association made a statement about trying to make "everyone" happy. I spoke out about how everyone will NEVER be completely satisfied nor happy all of the time. There will always be someone unhappy or complaining.

Mr. Dreads tried to make a comment against the American Lung Association who pointed out that smoke free campuses are becoming a social trend. He tried to say that we shouldn't be following the crowd and we shouldn't do what everyone else is doing (He was basically a fool who just really wanted to smoke where ever and when ever). A freshman took the stand and spoke out on how it is becoming a social norm. When he applied to live in the dorms he needed to sign and return a form that said clearly that the University of Minnesota Duluth campus has a smoking ban. He additionally commented that since it was so clearly pointed out that it was a priority on campus if the smoker saw that and had a problem maybe they should think about attending a different school where that isn't a high priority to the campus. I completely agree! You know what you're getting yourself into. Sorry incoming newbies.

As to you vets that have been around since the ban wasn't implemented at the beginning of your journey --> respect others. Smoke before you come to school, smoke after you leave school. It's all a respect thing and common courtesy.  I don't do stuff to harm your life and you shouldn't be allowed to do things to harm mine.

I'm sorry if you are offended, you are entitled to your own feelings. However, as so, I'm entitled to mine and I do not want this ban to be removed. I believe that our campus needs to remain smoke free and that change will come about. It is a newly implemented system and needs time to develop and catch on. Give it a chance to grow and embrace it.

Eye Opener: Environmental Working Group

Environmental Working Group: Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database put me through some loops! I've never heard of this website before but now after being introduced to it I'm putting it on my favorites tab. Talk about an eye opener! I entered this website to find out some easy info on my make up choices (duh what girl doesn't want to know what exactly she's putting on her face). YIKES! I started scrolling through some choices and was flabbergasted at the levels of hazard some of these products can give off.  Immediately, I went to my own makeup bag and checked in with the top 3 products I use daily. Mascara, blush, and foundation. Luckily all of my levels weren't more than a 3 (low to moderate level of hazard included). I wasn't quite satisfied with my findings and I knew I had to be using something that was off the "safe" level so I continued searching.

There it was --> my beloved hairspray was dragging me down. I HAVE BEEN using Aussie Real Volume Finishing Spray, Aerosol, Maximum Hold. The level read 8! I was floored; the hairspray I dearly love and faithfully use daily was dragging me down. I found this out-->
Ingredients in this product are linked to:
yes
Cancer
yes
Developmental/reproductive toxicity
yes
Violations, restrictions & warnings
yes
Allergies/immunotoxicity
yes
Other concerns for ingredients used in this product:
Neurotoxicity, Persistence and bioaccumulation, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Miscellaneous, Multiple, additive exposure sources, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Enhanced skin absorption, Contamination concerns, Occupational hazards, Biochemical or cellular level changes
Pretty much everything bad was listed in my own hairspray. I'm causing health hazards to myself simply by trying to have fun hair. Disappointment was pretty much all I felt because I knew that I couldn't continue using this product.

EUREKA, since I have this handy website available to me I could find a new spray that doesn't give me such a bad rating and won't damage my health to the extreme extent my old love would. As I searched I also evaluated prices (on a different web tab) to see exactly how much "better health" lands me in my pocketbook. I found Suave Professionals Extra Hold Shaping Aerosol Hairspray which only ranked a level 4 on the hazards level (1/2 of what my Aussie brand was). Plus, an added bonus to this new hairspray was that it was WAY cheap!! This ended up being a lucky find on my part and entitled me to a new lease on my hair and my body's life. Hip Hip Hooray!

Be careful out there bloggers, beauty can kill. (Well, at least harm)
